7-Day Cusco Itinerary: The Ideal Route (With Acclimatization Built In)

By Cusco Transporte Team August 21, 2026 3 min read

The most common mistake when planning a Cusco itinerary is putting the most demanding activity (Vinicunca, Humantay) in the first two days, before your body has adjusted to the altitude. This 7-day itinerary is designed the other way around: it starts gentle and builds up in intensity, so you reach the toughest hikes already acclimatized.

Day 1: Arrival and rest

Airport transfer to your hotel, and that’s it. Seriously — resist the urge to walk around a lot on day one. Let your body start adjusting to Cusco’s 3,400-meter altitude.

Book your arrival transfer

Day 2: Cusco City Tour

A gentle activity, mostly by vehicle with short walking stops: the cathedral, Qorikancha, Saqsayhuaman, and other sites near the city. A good second acclimatization day with some historical content mixed in.

Day 3: Sacred Valley (full day)

With two days of altitude already behind you, this is a good time for the Sacred Valley — Ollantaytambo, Pisac, and if you choose the VIP version, Chinchero, Moray, and the Maras Salt Mines too. It’s a long day but with moderate physical effort.

Book the Sacred Valley VIP

Day 4: Machu Picchu

The day everyone’s waiting for. Private transfer to the train station in Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes, bus up to the citadel. Leave very early — ideally coordinate the transfer with your exact train time.

Arrange your station transfer

Day 5: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)

By day 5 you should be well acclimatized — this is the moment to attempt Vinicunca, which climbs up to 5,000 meters. It’s demanding, so don’t schedule it earlier in the itinerary.

Book your Vinicunca visit

Day 6: Maras, Moray & Salt Mines (half day) + free afternoon

A gentler day after the effort of Vinicunca. Half a day of touring, and a free afternoon to rest, shop for souvenirs, or explore downtown Cusco at your own pace.

Book this half-day tour

Day 7: Departure

Transfer from your hotel to the airport. Plan for at least 2 hours before your flight for international check-in.

What if I have more or fewer days?

This itinerary can be compressed to 5 days by dropping day 2 (city tour) and day 6 (Maras/Moray), or extended by adding Humantay Lake or the 7 Lakes of Ausangate if you have more time and are already well acclimatized.
