Trains to Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes) depart from two stations: Poroy, closer to Cusco city, and Ollantaytambo, inside the Sacred Valley. Ollantaytambo is the one most travelers use because it has more frequent departures, and both operators — PeruRail and IncaRail — run trains from there.

There’s an extra benefit few people consider: Ollantaytambo sits at 2,792 meters above sea level, considerably lower than Cusco (3,400 m). If you’ve just landed and are still feeling the effects of the altitude, descending into the Sacred Valley helps you feel better before the Machu Picchu hike.

Real distance and travel time

What time should you leave the airport to not miss your train?

• 20 to 30 minutes from landing to collecting your luggage and leaving the terminal (more if there’s a delay at the belt).
• 20 to 30 minutes of buffer at the station before the train departs — cutting it close is risky, trains don’t wait.

In practice, if your train leaves at 10:00 am, you should be leaving the airport no later than 7:15–7:30 am. If your flight lands later than that, it’s worth considering a later train instead of risking it.

• Exchange some money into soles before leaving the airport — you’ll need cash along the way and in Ollantaytambo.
• Keep your train ticket (printed or on your phone) and your passport handy, you’ll be asked for them at the station.
