Cusco City Tour: Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Puca Pucara, and Tambomachay in Half a Day

Cusco’s “City Tour” is the name given to the visit of four archaeological sites that sit literally minutes apart from each other, just outside the city: Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Puca Pucara, and Tambomachay. It can be done in half a day, doesn’t require much physical effort, and is the most direct introduction to Inca engineering before heading to the Sacred Valley or Machu Picchu.

The 4 sites, explained

Sacsayhuamán

The largest and most impressive of the four. Its zigzagging walls, built from stone blocks weighing up to 100 tons fitted together without mortar, were part of a ceremonial and possibly military complex overlooking the city of Cusco. The main Inti Raymi ceremony takes place here every June 24. By far, this is the site that deserves the most time.

Qenqo

A limestone rock outcrop carved with channels, staircases, and an underground chamber. It’s believed to have been used for rituals involving chicha (corn beer) or, according to other theories, sacrifices and mummification. It’s a small site but with an atmosphere unlike any other — it’s worth stepping into the inner chamber.

Puca Pucara

Literally “red fortress” in Quechua, named for the tone the stone takes on in the afternoon light. It’s believed to have functioned as a checkpoint or tambo (waystation) on the route toward the Sacred Valley. It’s the smallest and quickest to visit of the four.

Tambomachay

Known as the “Inca Baths,” it’s a system of channels and water fountains that still flows today, more than 500 years after it was built. The precision of Inca hydraulic engineering is the main draw here.

How much it costs: the Cusco Tourist Ticket

All 4 sites are grouped under Circuit I of the Tourist Ticket (BTC), the same ticket system used for Chinchero, Pisac, and Ollantaytambo:

Ticket typePrice (foreigner)ValidityIncludes
Partial Circuit IS/ 701 daySacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Puca Pucara, Tambomachay
Full/integral ticket (16 sites)S/ 13010 daysThe 4 above + Sacred Valley + museums

You can’t enter any of the 4 sites without this ticket — there are no individual site-by-site entrance tickets.

How much time it takes

Half a day (3 to 4 hours) is enough to see all 4 sites at a relaxed pace, spending more time at Sacsayhuamán (1 to 1.5 hours) and less at the other three (20-30 minutes each). The logical order, from closest to farthest from the city, is: Sacsayhuamán → Qenqo → Puca Pucara → Tambomachay — and you take the same road back.

Can you do it on foot?

Partially, yes. Sacsayhuamán is about a 30-40 minute uphill walk from the Plaza de Armas (demanding because of the altitude, but doable if you’re already acclimatized). Between the 4 sites, the total distance is 2 to 8 km / 1 to 5 miles by road, without a sidewalk the whole way — most visitors cover this stretch by shared van, taxi, or private transport, walking only within each archaeological site.

Group tour vs. private transfer

Most agencies in Cusco sell the “City Tour” as a half-day group tour, usually in the afternoon (starting between 1 and 2 pm), with a guide and transport shared with other tourists, moving at a fixed pace for the whole group.

The alternative is a private transfer: you move at your own pace, decide how much time to spend at each site (more time at Sacsayhuamán if photography interests you, or skip one if you’re already tired), and you’re not tied to other passengers’ schedule.

Our recommendation

If it’s your first day in Cusco, keep in mind these sites sit between 3,600 and 3,700 m (11,800-12,100 ft) — higher than the city itself. It’s not the best plan for your arrival day if you’re just starting to feel the altitude; give yourself a day to acclimatize first.
