Humantay Lake is that turquoise photo with the snow-capped peak in the background you probably saw before deciding to come to Cusco. It’s real, and it’s a full day away — but like Vinicunca, it’s more demanding than it looks in photos. Here are the concrete numbers so you show up prepared.
How high up is the lake?
The lake sits at 4,200 meters above sea level. The trailhead, Soraypampa, is already at roughly 3,875–3,900 meters — meaning you start the hike at almost the same altitude as Cusco, then climb another 300 meters.
Distance and hiking time
- From Cusco to Soraypampa: 3 to 3.5 hours by road.
- The hike: roughly 7.5 km round trip, with a 400-meter elevation gain. Going up takes about 1.5 hours; coming down, less than an hour.
- Difficulty: moderate in technical terms — no dangerous sections or climbing — but the altitude makes the effort feel considerably harder than the distance suggests.
Do I need to be in great shape?
You don’t need to be an athlete, but you do need to arrive acclimatized. We recommend spending at least one full day in Cusco before attempting this hike; two days give you a noticeably better margin. Going straight from the airport to Humantay the same day is a recipe for a rough time.

What to bring
- Layered clothing — it’s cold in Soraypampa early morning, but the high-altitude sun warms up fast during the climb.
- Trekking poles if you have sensitive knees, the descent is where you’ll feel it most.
- Water and snacks — there aren’t many places to buy them along the way.
- Sunscreen: at this altitude the sun burns much faster than it seems.
Vinicunca or Humantay?
If you’re deciding between this hike and Rainbow Mountain, both are similar in difficulty and altitude — the decision usually comes down to scenery: colorful mountain vs. glacial lake. Many travelers with enough time end up doing both on different days.
