Private vs. Group Tours in Cusco: Which One Is Right for You?

Almost every tour in Cusco is offered in two versions: shared (on a bus with other passengers you don’t know) and private (just your group). The price difference is real, but so is the experience difference — here’s an unbiased breakdown so you can decide with full information.

Group tours: the good and the not-so-good

Advantages:

• Lower price per person, especially if you’re traveling solo or as a couple.
• Easy to find at any agency in Cusco.

Real downsides:

• The schedule is set by the whole group, not you. If someone shows up late, everyone waits.
• Fixed stops and pace — no flexibility to stay longer somewhere you loved, or skip a stop that doesn’t interest you.
• Pickup at multiple hotels before reaching yours (or after, on the way back), which adds real time to the day.

Private tours: the good and the not-so-good

Advantages:

• The vehicle is only for your group — you leave when you want, and stay as long as you want at each stop.
• Direct pickup at your hotel, no intermediate stops.
• Priced per vehicle, not per person — if you’re traveling in a group of 3-4, the per-person cost ends up comparable to a group tour, with far more flexibility.
• You can adjust the itinerary on the go (within reason) if you want more time somewhere.

What to consider:

• If you’re traveling solo, the per-person price is higher than a group tour — the math changes depending on how many of you there are.

So, which one should you choose?

• Traveling in a group or family (3 or more people): private usually ends up at a very similar per-person cost to shared, with much more comfort. It’s the clear choice.
• Traveling solo or as a couple, and price is your top priority: shared can be more economical, if you accept the lack of schedule flexibility.
• You have a flight or train you absolutely can’t miss: private eliminates the risk of other passengers making you late — this applies especially to airport or train station transfers.
