If you’ve already visited Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo and want an archaeological site just as impressive but without the crowds, Waqrapukara is the answer. Few tourists know about this place, and that’s exactly its biggest draw.
What is Waqrapukara?
The name comes from Quechua “waqra” (horn) and “pukara” (fortress) — “horn-shaped fortress,” named for the two rock formations that jut out from the structure like horns. It’s built on a cliff overlooking the Apurimac River canyon, and its true purpose remains a mystery to historians — it may have been a sacred sanctuary, a military fortress, or a ceremonial energy center — no one knows for certain.
Location and altitude
Waqrapukara is about 116 km southeast of Cusco, in Acomayo province. The site sits at 4,140 meters of altitude.
How to get there and the hike
The trip from Cusco takes 2 to 3 hours by road to the trailhead in Santa Lucia, passing through meadows and the Pomacanchi lagoon. From there, the hike varies by route:
- Santa Lucia route: 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking — the most commonly used.
- Sangarara route: 3 to 4 hours — longer, for those looking for more trekking.
Difficulty is moderate — the altitude and the final ascent are the most demanding part, without it being a technical climb.
Why do so few people visit?
Unlike Machu Picchu or Vinicunca, Waqrapukara doesn’t appear in most agencies’ standard itineraries. The result: you can have the canyon view almost to yourself, something that’s become nearly impossible at Cusco’s more famous sites.
How much it costs

How to prepare
- At least 1-2 acclimatization days in Cusco before going — it’s above 4,000 meters.
- Layered clothing and trekking shoes, the trail has sections of loose dirt.
- Water and snacks — it’s a rural area without many places to buy them.
